You hear real calls and songs and match them to the right species. Or you pick out one singing bird from a scene full of possible candidates.
Before you are tested, Nestling walks you through the marks that matter: where they are, how to recognise them and why they are decisive.
Every guide shows you the handful of marks that separate a species from its lookalikes: a wing bar, an eye ring, a patch of colour in exactly the right place. They are explained in plain language and marked directly on the illustration. That turns a beautiful image into knowledge you can actually use in the field.
Back and wing coverts are black, densely spotted with bright yellow-gold, the feature that gives the species its name and separates it from the plainer grey-brown Grey Plover.
A white band starts above the bill and runs back over the eye, marking the top edge of the pale border that frames the black face.
Breeding males show a solid black mask from bill to throat; females and non-breeding birds show far less black.
The white border continues down the side of the neck and along the flank, cutting a clean line between the spangled back and the black underparts.
In breeding male plumage the underparts are solid black, fading to white on the lower belly and undertail; in flight the axillaries are white, unlike the grey axillaries of American and Pacific Golden Plover.

Nestling grows with every new plate: more than 260 European species are already included, many of them in several plumages. Male and female, breeding and non-breeding dress, juveniles, and in different poses, from a perched bird to a flight silhouette. Our aim is a course that shows you Europe’s birds as you meet them outdoors.
A photo shows one moment: harsh light here, deep shadow there, a branch across the wing. For learning you want the opposite. Idealised plates in the tradition of classic field guides, where every bird stands in even light and every mark sits exactly where you need to see it. That is why Nestling teaches with plates, not photos.
Every plate starts from real photographs of the actual species, and we only use imagery we are licensed to use. Modern image tools, AI-assisted as photo tooling is today, translate the photograph into the app's consistent plate style: the right plumage, pose and perspective, with the marks that decide the identification.
Behind it stands our own Nestling Studio. There, every plate is checked against the real bird: are the proportions, the plumage and the identifying marks right? With targeted corrections the depiction is refined step by step until it is accurate and beautiful. Nothing is published automatically: a person reviews and releases every plate, and later improvements stay traceable in its history.

Always only with your explicit permission, and with credit if you wish.
